Vantage Point (2008)

Info:
President Ashton (William Hurt) is attending a global war on terror summit in Spain. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) are two of the Secret Service agents assigned to protect him. This is the first action that Agent Barnes has been in since he took a bullet for President Ashton six-month earlier. We really dont know if Agent Barnes is up to the challenge of protecting the President. Shortly after President Ashton is escorted to the stage in the plaza by the Secret Service, he is immediately shot twice by a rifle from a window and falls to the floor. The crowd is in shock and chaos breaks out all over, especially, when bombs begin to explode. Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) is an American video-taping the event to show to his children that he was actually there at this historic event. He believes that he has the picture of the man who shot the President. Agent Barnes sees the tape and has a clue to that person. Several different people witness the event, and only through their eyes do we see the truth behind the assassination attempt.

Zack and Miri Make an Unfortunate Trip Through the MPAA

At tonight’s Kevin Smith Comic Con panel, Smith spoke publicly about the ratings trouble plaguing his new film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. For those who are unfamiliar, the film chronicles a pair of friends’ attempt at making a porno film in order to squash some financial woes, and how their relationship develops in the process. Given the raunchy premise, the potential for edgy sexual content was great, and indeed, in the eyes of the MPAA, apparently too great. The film was initially given an NC-17. Smith took the film, made some edits, and resubmitted it to the MPAA, where it was given an NC-17 rating yet again. The film was resubmitted once more and received one final NC-17, so Smith concluded, “I’ve gone as far as I can go,” and appealed the rating.

There are two specific scenes that the MPAA wants cut, one of which involves “thrusting” and the other of which involves acts that are “unspeakable.” The appeal will occur on August 4th, after which, if an NC-17 rating is decided, Smith will be contractually obligated to deliver an R-rated film. He does not intend to fight the system on this one and he will make an R-rated cut, although he has said that he would rather make the R-rated film edit himself, since “my R would be a little better” than the studio’s R-rated version of the film.

In the past, we’ve written about how the MPAA gave Smith a difficult time with his teaser trailer. It seems more and more as though the entire process of getting Zack and Miri Make a Porno will serve as an unfortunate and depressing window into not only the MPAA’s sexual prudeness but also its increasing desire to have more control over every aspect of a film’s marketing materials (especially those on the internet). We at Slashfilm wish Smith the best of luck in getting his new film approved for the mass audience.

Comic Con: The Owlship From Watchmen

The Owlship from Watchmen has landed at the San Diego Comic Con. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to board the ship. Check out my photos below.

Witchblade Finds a Director, Michael Rymer of Battlestar Galactica

When the teaser poster for the comic book adaptation Witchblade was released in May (right), we reported that Michael Rymer was attached to direct and today it was confirmed. Rymer most notably produced and directed a large batch of Battlestar Galactica episodes, which gives him enough cachet with geeks to forgive his feature 2002 effort, Queen of the Damned (that vampire movie with Aaliyah). I always imagined someone like McG or Simon West helming this cyber-cleavage flick, but geekier is better.

The lead actress has not been chosen—the teaser poster from Top Cow Productions simply used a Jessica Alba facsimile to get you hyped! One of the rare female superheroes headed to the big screen, the character is a “specially chosen female who comes into possession of a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers called the Witchblade. The jewel-encrusted gauntlet gives the wearer extraordinary powers.” I guess it’s better than marrying a bald guy for his money or talking about handies with a 50-year-old SJP. TV vet Everett De Roche (Cybergirl, Parallax, Stingers, Flipper ‘95) wrote the script.

Discuss: Is Rymer a nice choice for Witchblade? And what actress has the qualifications to pull this role off? Yancy Butler fans, please sum up your collective thoughts in a single comment, thanks.

The Creatures and Characters of Monsters vs. Aliens

Dreamworks Animation has released eight promotional trading cards showcasing the creatures and characters of their upcoming 3D computer animated film Monsters vs. Aliens. I’m sure these will be available on the comic con show floor somewhere.

Monsters vs. Aliens hits theaters on March 27th 2009.

Boondock Saints 2 Plot Revealed

It’s been four months since Troy Duffy announced that a Boondock Saints sequel had officially been given the green light. The video of the announcement was removed from Troy’s website within hours of going live. Troy appeared on WJFK 106.7 and confirmed that “barring an actors strike” the film is scheduled to go into production in August. Duffy revealed the plot of the second film:

“You kind of wonder what has happened to the brothers… They have been living way back in the valleys of Ireland with their father on a family run sheep farm, way beyond the reach of technology or men. Way out there. It’s been sort of a bucolic existence, hard working pioneer-esque type stuff. They have long hair and beards, and stuff like that. You get the sense that they’ve been hibernating to come back. And there is an event that transpires in Boston. A priest murdered in a church and the body is rigged to make it look like the Saints did it. The one guy that the brothers and father have contact with is Il Duce’s brother. So he gets the first notion of this, puts his jeep in gear and tells the brothers what happened. And without even thinking of it the boys are up and out of there … they cut their hair, digg up their rosaries, strap on their guns, and they’re gone! And Dad has to stay back because something is wrong with him, and you can tell he doesn’t have much time left. So when the brothers smuggle themselves back to the US, back to Boston, in a very understandable way. And one of the guys they meet along the way is a Hispanic American named Romeo. And Romeo ends up becoming like the third brother or saint, fourth I guess if you’re gonna consider Billy. He’s a lot more of a bad ass than Rocco was. But his comedy is that he wants to be a lot more a part of this. So there is a lot of humor that comes from that. He’s hopefully going to be played by a friend of mine named Clifton Collins, who was in Capote and Frankie Flowers in Traffic.”

“When they land they basically start killing everything that they think is responsible for that priest’s death. And Romeo has a connection to the Hispanic underground in Boston, which over the last ten years has become pretty exceptional. That is how they are finding their information this time, instead of from Rocco in the first one. So, we’ve got some great set pieces, some big gun play and new types of stunts. But, right off the bat, we have the same three detectives back. And they are confronted … because Williem is not going to be in the second one… He is dead right off the top, and his protege, she is named Unis Bloom, she is a George peach. She’s got that doc holiday accent, super super sexy. So she’s the one going after the saints and now working with these three officers. And she’s FBI. Now immediately, the cops from the first film, they were all in on it. They helped the saints at the end of the day, they crossed over to the dark side. And they don’t know if she knows or not. That’s something we play with throughout the film. There is no love interest by the way. A lot of people hear there is going to be a female lead in Boondock and think there is going to be some kind of love interest… don’t worry about that… That’s not happening. It’s a way to throw a curb-ball at the audience.” … “So for my money, you can’t just give them everything they loved from the first one. You have to give them a new story. She is that new story. She is one hell of a firecracker. She starts going with the cops, and this helps preserve something I loved about Boondocks 1, and fans have remarked about. Billy’s character Il Duce is the third act. He blasts the story wide open. And because we’re keeping him in Ireland, he gets to do the same thing here. He comes back in the third act. The brothers, everything you think is going on, isn’t going on. Here’s the guy that did this. And it ends up being an old guy who has a connection to Billy. And you sort of figure out where this has all been going. And we go into a period flashback and we explain how Il Duce got to be Il Duce.” … “all the way to the point where he makes the first version of that leather vest.”

“Rocco is actually coming back in a dream sequence, so you will see Roc.”

You can listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of the interview on wjfk.com. Geeks of Doom also has the first production dairy from the upcoming production. I’m excited for a sequel, but am still skeptical as to if the production will actually happen or not. I’ll believe it when the first day of principle photography begins.

Most Moviegoers Plan To See Dark Knight Again

64% of Dark Knight moviegoers say they plan to see the movie again in the theater, according to a poll conducted this weekend by fandango. Sixty-two percent of those respondents said that Heath Ledger’s incredible performance is the factor that makes them want to see it a second time.

Step Brothers Red Band Clip

“You’re going to take your two weeks paid vacation and your five sick days to start off?” One thing The Dark Knight was lacking was f-bombs. Enter Will Ferrell, who is getting slammed in our comments section as of late, and John C. Reilly, playing a manchild named Dale, in next weekend’s cuss-fest Step Brothers. The film is tracking in line with Ferrell’s R-rated wipeout Semi-Pro, but early WOM on this film amongst people who know the funny is strong. This here clip is an upgraded version of the “job interview in tuxedo” scenes, and it will add a NSFW sparkle to your 9-to-5 smile.

Monsters Inc Ride Coming to Disney World?

Jim Hill is reporting that Walt Disney Imagineering will be adding a new Monsters Inc attraction to Pixar Place in Walt Disney World just in time for the park’s 40th anniversary. Apparently the lie queue area will entail an elaborate recreation of the Monsters, Inc lobby, complete with Mike Wazowski’s snake-haired girlfriend Ceilia behind the reception desk. The ride will be set after the events of the film, and human visitors of Disney World will come tour the facility as part of an open house. The two-minute long coaster attraction is rigged to collect human laughter and screams from the guests, and ends with a bang. Read the full description on Jim Hill Media. I’m glad that Disney is looking to flesh out the Pixar attractions at the Disney parks.

Crank 2: High Voltage Pics. Man in Suit!!! Etc.

What must it feel like to see a man in your suit parade around an electrical field? Jason Statham, sit back and put on some shades. Today, the LA Times unleashed a crop of behind-the-scenes photos for Crank 2: High Voltage. Apparently directors and /Film buds, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, have thought up a zany Godzilla-esque dream sequence for their much anticipated, free-basing sequel due April ‘09. And while it looks promising—nice stubble, check—can it possibly top Bobcat Goldthwait’s man-in-suit destruction from One Crazy Summer?

Alan Ball’s True Blood Poster

HBO has released a poster for Alan Ball’s upcoming HBO series True Blood. In addition to creating Six Feet Under, Ball won an Adademy Award for America Beauty, and directed the upcoming film adaptation of Towelhead. True Blood is based on Charlaine Harris’ “Southern Vampire” novel series. The series follows the world of vampires set in small-town Louisiana. Apparently the vampires are able to co-exist with humans by drinking a Japanese-manufactured synthetic blood. /Film’s David Chen will be reporting from the True Blood panel later this week at Comic Con 2008. The series is set to premiere on HBO starting September 7th 2008.
